I travelled around the US for months and do a combination of campgrounds, cabins, hotels, yurts, and also do tours, eat out sometimes and visit museums, amusement parks or other activities and we spend about $3k-3.5k a month for two people and we get to see the best of the country, and that includes vehicle costs and insurances back home, so more like $2k-2.5k strictly for traveling. We live semi-modestly. We prefer nature, national parks, and doing outdoorsy stuff and those are always free/cheap so it does save a lot of money. But in my opinion, those are the most emblematic places to visit in the US.
I agree the US is expensive if you want to stay in hotels all the time and eat out regularly. For that price your money goes better abroad. But even then, it’s all about choices. I spent $3k for 4 days once in Mexico (3 people). I understand that was my choice and I spent that in purpose because I wanted to have a great time. We rented a car to explore, we took tours, we ate out regularly, we stayed in nice hotels, and I’m also including flights.
But if you’re into camping/overlander lifestyle, love the outdoors and know how to be frugal the US is an amazing destination. Few places have been a tear-jerker for me. I can spend a year in Yellowstone alone.
