New Zealand’s 11th Great Walk: Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track

The Great Walks are New Zealand’s premier walking tracks, passing through diverse and spectacular scenery. The newest addition – Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a world-class three-day loop track along the southwest coast of New Zealand’s South Island, taking hikers through deserted beaches, coastal forests, and sup-alpine environments across Fiordland’s rugged inland terrain.

The 60 km track caters to all skill levels and travel desires, with three trail options ranging from highly experienced to beginner-friendly, and the choice of multi-share accommodations, or a touch of luxury in private lodges.

Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track Experience

The Hump Ridge Track takes hikers through coastal areas, deserted beaches, and native forests up to the sub-alpine zone. This trek showcases New Zealand’s diverse landscape, transitioning between beaches to mountains within a single day.

Travel around limestone tors (rock formations) and enjoy panoramic views of Fiordland National Park, featuring pristine lakes and rugged mountain ranges. Observe native flora such as rimu, and fauna including kea, kākā, bellbirds, fantails, grey warblers, and South Island robins, whilst also catching a glimpse at Hector Dolphins playing in Te Waewae Bay.

First opened in 2001, the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track has recently received extensive renovations and significant upgrades, futureproofing the track against climate change and natural hazards.

Unlike other Great Walks, hikers can stay in private backcountry lodges with fully equipped kitchens, a licensed bar, a shop, and hot showers. Upgrades are available to all options, such as private rooms.

Three difficulty levels:

  • The Freedom Walk with multi-share accommodation (Hard)
  • The Prime Package for a touch of luxury (Moderate)
  • The Guided Walk for a fully guided and catered experience (Easy)
